


Before joining the firm (then known as Gildenhuys Inc) in 1985, Kobus worked at the SA Reserve Bank and also at Central Merchant Bank as Senior Investment Analyst. Since being admitted as an Attorney in 1986, Kobus has worked in the firm’s Corporate and Commercial Department. He obtained his LLM degree in Company Law in 1987, became a Director of the firm in 1989, and was admitted as Notary Public in 1991. Kobus plays a crucial role in the firm as Financial Director and a member of its Executive Committee since 1997.
Kobus is a part-time instructor at the LSSA’s School for Legal Practice and is a regular guest lecturer at a number of Universities on the subject of Forms of Business Enterprises. He also participated in a series of radio discussions and phone-in programmes on the subject of Business Entities, particularly companies, close corporations and partnerships. A number of listed and unlisted public companies and large private corporate groups rank as clients of Kobus’ practice to whom a broad spectrum of corporate and commercial law services are rendered. As a special field of interest Kobus also advise on Trusts and Estate Planning matters and has been a guest lecturer for a number of years at the Advanced Diploma in Trust Law and Estate Planning presented by the University of Pretoria.
Most recent achievements of note were the structuring and preparation of the transaction documentation for the merger between Africon (Pty) Ltd and Ninham Shand (Pty) Ltd and the subsequent merger of this merged entity with one of the largest consulting engineering firms in Australia. He also structured the contractual documentation relating to the establishment of a number of Employee Share Ownership programmes for privatised Safcol subsidiaries and also Employee Share Incentive schemes for a listed company. Kobus also did the structuring and preparation of group reconstruction agreements for a number of medium to large private company groups, involving foreign interest holders.
